There is no denying that the UK and Ireland have definitely suffered the brunt of bad weather in the last quarter. Starting in November 2015 the UK was embroiled in a dispute with hurricane Abigail where the aftermath of the storm left a trail of destruction and chaos strewn accross the UK causing major flooding, electrical power outages and physical damage, to the extent where families were homless over the Christmas period. With that said rapid response teams were quick to act with the implementation of efficient counter measures and the increase of 24 hour care and staffing accross the board. As things were starting to improve in the aftermath of Abigail there is now a new threat in the form of storm Frank which is fast approaching. In this weeks blog we thought we would look at the counter measures that you can take to help you ensure your home is safe and secure in the event of future storms. At the end of the day it is always better to be safe than sorry.
It's probably fair to say that the sight of a sandbag is a universally bad sign for anyone in that area. Most commonly found in extreme conditions sandbags are generally used to prevent the intake of water to homes and businesses. This 10 pack of silverline sandbags costs a mere £4.60 and are not limited use in extreme weather conditions. With a heavy duty manufacture they can be used to store sand or remove rubble and debris thanks to their tough wearing interwoven polypropylene fabrication that provides immense material strength suiting the storage and transpoprt of heavy loads. So don't get caught out this year be prepared and make sure to have some bags ready to go.
It seems trivial but incorporating a weather bar can do your home alot of good. For the price of £58.68 you can purchase a 1829mm weather bar that will cover two standard inwards
opening doors, so any external door of your home. The main benefit of the exitex weather
bar is its specific design which has been developed to suit a 28mm underdoor clearance and is suitable for doors in extremely exposed locations such as a seaside home that recieves alot of pummeling from the wind and rain.
It differs from most standard draft excluders where it does not feature a rubber seal,
that can be worn and torn with general foot
traffic and weather damage. Instead it
features a solid brass block design that is impregnanble to both physical and elemental damage.
Got garden furniture? I know I do and unfortunately I lack the storage space to pack it away neatly during the colder winter months. However this fantastic large garden furniture cover by Garland costing £30.34 provided more than adequete protection for my timber jack and jill. Initially I was worried that the bad weather would eventually end up corroding the wood due to excess water damage coupled with the rubbish that northernly winds and storms bring. However that wasn't the case. With a strong PVC backed fabrication the garden furniture cover provided fantastic protection against both water and UV damage. In addition to this the cover incorporates a cord drawn tightening string allowing you to attach it and its contents to something more secure in stormy conditions (the gutter in my case).
If you are fortunate enough to have a garden or outdoor living area with your home then I'm
sure like most people there are external items such as garden furniture, kids toys, bbqs and more to think of. Most of the time well leave our garden furniture and items out all year round for convenience or because of a lack of available storage. BUT protecting our external goods is equally as important as protecting our homes. The Apollo ground hooks are have been fabricated from high grade steel and
galvanised to protect against rust and
corrosion. For a mere £2.26 this 6 pack of
pegs did a great job when it came to holding down the childrens trampoline. Alternatively it
can be used to tie down furniture or other
garden items.
The DeVielle Electric water bottles and blanket may not be ideal for protecting your home but I thought it was worth a mention seeing as it will keep you warm, comfortable and protected on those cold and blustery nights. The hot water bottles featured in this kit are simply fantastic. With intuitive safety features and thermal cut off it means that there is no risk of scaulding from the bottles making them perfect for people of all ranges, including little ones. They are cordless and boast a smashing 15 minute charge time. Similar to the water bottles the electric blanket also features a thermal protection overload function giving you peace of mind that you are safe and sound at night. It features an individual manual temperature control and at £40.99 this kit is perfect for that sound nights sleep.
For those of you that are not familiar with this particular item it is the Draper 33081 drill
powered pump. Essentially the pump is a small device that is compatible with a 400 watt plus
drill or screwdriver, corded or cordless. Saying that the drill powered pump isn't something that you should need to refer to very often. If it's a
tool that you would or do use regularly then you've got a problem. As mentioned this
fantastic device is designed to be used in conjunction with a drill driver; which provides
the pump with power. It has been engineered
for the removal of light to medium watering tasks.
For example if you have excess water seeping through a door seal and it's collecting in a
puddle this automated pump is a fast an
efficient means of draining the water out and
is a steal costing a mere £32.06.
